IAG Fights to Protect Medicaid Services for Individuals with Disabilities

Writer: iagcaresiagcares

Medicaid is the foundation of essential services that support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), helping them live independently through personal care, job coaching, assistive technology, and more. However, proposed budget cuts threaten to dismantle these critical programs, leaving thousands without the care they rely on. Even if I/DD services aren’t directly targeted, the ripple effect of these reductions could be devastating, forcing states to cut back on crucial programs and placing an overwhelming burden on families and caregivers.

Organizations like the Individual Advocacy Group (IAG) are on the front lines, advocating for those at risk. As a nonprofit dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities, IAG relies heavily on Medicaid funding to provide life-changing support. The proposed $32 million cut in Illinois alone would slash 90 service hours per person annually, straining both individuals and the caregivers who support them. Programs that promote communication, creativity, and independence—often not covered by Medicaid—could disappear altogether, further limiting opportunities for those who need them most.

This fight isn’t just about policy—it’s about people. A funding loss of this scale would impact the quality of care, increase caregiver burnout, and strip individuals of their right to a dignified, independent life. The time to act is now. Contact your local representatives and urge them to oppose Medicaid cuts. Together, we can protect these essential services and ensure that individuals with disabilities continue to receive the care and support they deserve.
